Normally, the P239 has 2 different serial number prefixes: SA (9mm), and SA4 (.40 S&W & .357 SIG). I've seen a few of the S4 prefixes like yours lately. I have no idea where they fit in with the SA and SA4 serials. With that, it's hard to guage the date of manufacture. Does yours have the "Frame Made In Germany ...I purchased a NIB P229-1 (E29R-9-XTM-PROMO) back in March. An old forum post indicates that it was sold as a combo package in separate boxes with a P290. I see that the manufacture date on the box is 5-Sep-2014. My other two Sigs have manufacture dates within two months from when I purchased them in 2016 (yes, I may have the Signess).As I was told by Sig Sauer, the Exeter made/assembled pistols do not require but one serial number on the frame. Whereas the German made weapons will nearly always have a serial number on the barrel, slide and frame as well, and especially if all 3 serial numbers matched, it was made in Germany.I recently acquired a West German P230. I called SIG CS to get what information I could. The rep said their database only goes back to 2006, but they have a list of older guns by SN. I was told mine (S1176xx) was manufactured in 1985. He further said all of the S117xxx series were manufactured in 1985.
